La ciudad contemporánea ha sido formada, o deformada, a partir del uso del automóvil. Por poner un ejemplo, los vehículos aparcados o en movimiento ocupan entre el 40% o el 50% del espacio público disponible. La fotografía de arquitectura, sin embargo, omite e invisibiliza su presencia, dando cuenta de lo inapropiado que resulta en la representación de la ciudad ideal.


La pandemia y su confinamiento nos dieron la posibilidad de poder vislumbrar una urbe con menos vehículos, más paseable, silenciosa y amable. En Madrid, por ejemplo, en aquellos días, si paseabas entre la puerta de Murillo del Museo del Prado y las puertas del Jardín Botánico podías oír claramente el sonido de la fuentes que allí se encuentran.

En este libro encontrarás una ciudad con coches y coches con ciudades, arquitecturas transfiguradas y vehículos como soporte imaginario de una ciudad alternativa.

The contemporary city has been shaped, or distorted, by the use of the automobile. To give an example, parked or moving vehicles occupy between 40% and 50% of available public space. Architectural photography, however, omits and renders their presence invisible, reflecting how inappropriate they are in representing the ideal city.


The pandemic and lockdown gave us the chance to glimpse a city with fewer vehicles, more walkable, quieter, and friendlier. In Madrid, for example, during those days, if you walked between the Murillo gate of the Prado Museum and the gates of the Botanical Garden, you could clearly hear the sound of the fountains there.


In this book, you will find a city with cars and cars with cities, transfigured architecture, and vehicles as the imaginary support of an alternative city.

Juan de Salas (texto) y Asier Rua (fotografía) presentan, entre la imagen y la poesía, el archivo de un nuevo mundo. Extraño y familiar al mismo tiempo, es un mundo que aún no existe, o que lleva existiendo ya demasiado tiempo. Los nuevos elementos y técnicas constructivas y las transformaciones del gusto en los últimos dos siglos mermaron la importancia del adorno y la decoración en la arquitectura. A partir de la reflexión sobre los usos y la producción del ornamento, los materiales de construcción y la forma de nuestras ciudades, se reconstruye una historia del extractivismo contemporáneo desde el siglo XIX que busca en última instancia escapar del callejón sin salida en el que nos encontramos.
 Un mundonuevo (o «mundo nuevo», «mundinovi», «tutilimundi» o «titirimundi») era una atracción de feria, muy popular en el siglo XIX, en la que dentro de un gran cajón de madera y por medio de instrumentos ópticos, manivelas y mecanismos, se recreaban escenas y paisajes y se hacían desfilar figurillas. Sólo hacía falta una condición para que funcionase el truco: no haber sido engañado antes, y confiar ciegamente en tus ojos. Aquí se presenta una ciudad, pero quizás es un robo. Una sustitución, una pérdida, una copia, una aparición, un traslado, un destello, una prótesis. No es fácil fiarse. Lo importante es saber dónde acaba el recinto ferial: si no, todo podría ser eventualmente un truco.
